About A.R.T.I 5

This robot is very similar to our first A.R.T.I robot, number 1. It has the same obstacle avoidance ability, it runs on tracks, has a clear perspex sensor holder and an LCD screen at the front. The robot is relatively slow to our other bots because the motors are rated at 12v and we are only using a 9.6v battery at the moment. It is however much better at running its code than the other bots, despite the code being the same. Speed is likely a factor in this.

This robot is named Cysgod, which means Shadow in Welsh. Most of the robot is in dark colours. We’re big fans of halloween, and so Cysgod has orange supports for the Arduino boards and is running eerie green lights. Often, if you buy a chassis instead of making one, they will come pre-configured for anothe design, and will be very plain, often without enough space to do what we need. To get around this we used some meccano style building materials we found in a local store, and built two platforms upwards to mount all our electronics on.

There was a gap to bridge however, and so as you will see in the images, for this we used lollipop sticks. They were extremely delicate, so we used a hand drill and junior hacksaw to modify and for them. We used the nuts and bolts that came with the meccano and once we knew they fitted wlel enough, we painted them and mounted them on the robot. where they are now structurally sound.

Nota bene: In the images it is possible to see a different track configuration. The tracks that came with the chassis were too long. We were initially unable to adjust them properly as we could not remove the pins. While we waited for a tool to do this, we engineered a solution in the form of a tensioner wheel/bar. This worked very well, but was removed once we were able to properly adjust the tracks on the chassis.

Our A.R.T.I Robots are not kits. They all use different bought chassis, but they are then built from scratch, by us.
